ADAPT: WASP MEMBER UPDATE, March 2011

A Busy Season Providing Access to Sport and Recreation for All

Get Involved!
April 16 and 17: BC Para-Alpine Championships/Rotary Giant Slalom

The Whistler Adaptive Sports Program presents the BC Para-Alpine Championships (GS and SL) and Rotary GS on April 16 and 17 in Whistler.  This event is sanctioned by the Disabled Skiers Association of BC.  Follow the action on Whistler Mountain. WASP is still looking for volunteers to assist with course crew, gatekeepers, and slippers. Comp lift tickets and comp banquet tickets are available for volunteers.  Post-race, join WASP and celebrate the athletes at a banquet on Saturday, March 16 at 5:00 p.m. at the Hilton Whistler Resort and Spa. Additional tickets can be purchased for $25. The awards presentation will follow immediately the banquet.  Awards for the Slalom will take place in Whistler Village at 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 17.

March 13 – 18: Canadian Association For Disabled Skiing Festival

I am putting out a call for anyone who is still considering coming to CADS Festival March 13 to 18. For the first time that I can remember we have had to stop accepting students for the CADS Festival and have requested that they go on a waiting list. We just do not have enough Festival Instructors at present to take on any more students at this time.
Please forward this email to anyone you may know who is still considering coming to Festival as an instructor and have them email: Kim Atkins or Jimmy Colligan directly.

Join our Team of Passionate Volunteers

While keeping overhead costs as low as possible, WASP could not operate without the many dedicated volunteers who work enthusiastically behind the scenes and directly with participants.  Volunteers for administration, event management, coaching, program delivery and fundraising ensure WASP delivers the best possible experiences for participants.  WASP is now recruiting volunteers for this spring’s BC Para-Alpine Championships and Rotary GS on April 16 and 17.  Out-of-town volunteers can now book accommodation at the Whistler Athletes’ Centre Lodge for $50/night. Contact us at info@whistleradaptive.com or 604-905-4493 to book.

Missed Out? Highlights From our Recent Event:

John Furlong: Patriot HeartsJohn Furlong, VANOC CEO, was an engaging guest of honour at a book launch and WASP fundraising dinner last month. The event kicked off with a touching video highlight of Whistler during the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Furlong shared touching personal stories and sage advice on leadership with his highlights from Patriot Hearts: Inside the Olympics that Changed a Country. Special thanks to key supporters of this event: the Delta Whistler Village Suites, Maureen Douglas of Mobilize Strategies, The Whistler Forum, Armchair Books, Sea to Sky Celebrations. Keep the dreams alive for future Olympians: when you order a copy of Patriot Hearts, you’ll be contributing to the highly successful Own the Podium program.
