TELUS giving $100 to Whistler Adaptive Sports Program for every new Optik TV customer

Whistler, B.C. – For the next year, TELUS will contribute $100* on behalf of every new customer signing up for Optik TV in Whistler to the Whistler Adaptive Sports Program, a not-for-profit society that provides year-around, recreational programs for people of all ages with disabilities.

The Whistler Adaptive Sports Program provides the opportunity for hundreds of people with a wide range of disabilities to take part in sports and recreation programs, with a sense of adventure and the feeling of well-being that comes from immersing oneself in Whistler's world class recreational opportunities. Participants enjoy skiing, snowboarding, alpine racing and Nordic sports in winter months, as well as kayaking, canoeing, hiking, hand cycling, rowing, and triathlon activities in the summer.

“TELUS has been a tremendous supporter of the Whistler Adaptive Sports Program through our substantial growth during the last few years,” said Chelsey Walker, executive director. “We are so pleased that TELUS has chosen our organization for this amazing community contribution.  TELUS, through the Optik TV initiative, is actively breaking down the financial, social and economic barriers to world class sports, therapeutic and recreational opportunities for individuals with a disability.”

“Through sport, members of our community with disabilities have the opportunity to stay healthy, gain independence and indeed, excel in some pretty tough sports,” said Mike Black, TELUS general manager. “As members of the community, our TELUS team is proud to support the Whistler Adaptive Sports Program, along with every new customer who takes advantage of the most advanced suite of TV and High Speed Internet Services available. At TELUS, we are proud to give where we live.”

TELUS has contributed more than $5.1 million and 500 volunteer hours to community initiatives in Whistler since 2000.

TELUS offers Optik TV, powered by the award-winning Microsoft Mediaroom, in British Columbia and Alberta communities, including Whistler. TELUS invested $1.3 billion in infrastructure in these two provinces throughout 2010 to increase Internet speeds, introduce Optik TV to more communities, and expand its 4G wireless network. As part of the company’s $670 million infrastructure investment across British Columbia in 2011, TELUS will invest $4 million in the Sea-to-Sky communities, including Whistler.

The campaign is available to all Whistler residents who subscribe to Optik TV between August 3, 2011 and August 3, 2012. For more information, or to locate a TELUS store, please visit telus.com or call 310-MYTV.
