Canoeing – Summer 2011

Weekly Program

Our participants are provided with the opportunity to paddle various different locations with a trained guide and the volunteers required to provide a safe and fun canoeing experience. Sessions focus on building basic canoeing skills such as paddling strokes, canoe safety, manoeuvring in and out of the boat and how to work as a team with others in the boat.

Sessions are conducted in Whistler on Alta Lake, the River of Golden Dreams and Green Lake, providing the opportunity to explore many different areas over the course of several sessions. All equipment is generously provided by Whistler Eco Tours (WET) and each session starts at either their Wayside Park or Edgewater location.

We often use standard canoes with 2-3 paddlers but we also use the larger Voyager canoes to help build the team environment and apply our paddling skills to a different type of boat. Advance students do have the opportunity to learn to solo a canoe. Sessions are developed and modified to suit the needs and progress of each member of the group. Stronger paddlers can progress to stern paddling (or steering) the canoe.

The canoe sessions provide a great opportunity to get exercise and experience and to capture some beautiful wildlife moments. Some of our regular wildlife sightings include beaver, bear and birds of prey.

Weekly Scheduled Sessions run every Monday morning from 10-12, from May to October. Participants are asked to meet at 9:45 for registration and waiver signing.  An e-mail or call will be provided to each participant to inform them of which location is selected for the session along with directions to the canoeing location.

Course fees include instruction, equipment, and a membership in WASP (one time annual fee of $5) is required. Transportation to and from the canoeing location is not provided.

Sessions run rain or shine. High winds and storms may result in delay or cancelation of a session. Participants are required to dress and prepare appropriately for the weather. This includes warm layers for the cold days, and sunscreen, hats, sunglasses and water for hot days.

The weekly sessions are geared towards children, youth and adults with developmental disabilities. We strive to create a fun, safe, relaxed learning environment.
