Sea to Sky Coach - Disabled Alpine Ski - Vancouver Coach
Status: Part Time, Seasonal
Start date: December 1, 2006
Location: Lower Mainland Vancouver Adaptive Snow Sports, (VASS)
Hours: Approximately 14 hours/week; Availability to work weekends & evenings is required with the need for travel weekly occasionally between Vancouver and Whistler. There will also be some travel at the provincial and national level
Salary: Commensurate with qualifications & experience
Reports to: President VASS and High Performance Director DSABC
PURPOSE OF POSITION:
The Sea to Sky Regional Coach Position was developed last season to cover the whole Sea to Sky Corridor. This position will be split into two, with one Coach working with the program in Whistler and the other coach in Vancouver based on Grouse Mountain.
This posting is for the Vancouver based Coach. The Whistler position has been filled.
The Sea to Sky Coaches are key positions within the Adaptive Alpine Ski Integrated Performance System in British Columbia. The goal of this system is to develop athletes with disabilities living in the Sea to Sky Region (Vancouver through to the Whistler area). The Disabled Skiers Association of BC, PacificSport, Whistler Adaptive Sports Program and Vancouver Adaptive Snow Sports are partners in the delivery of this program. The Sea to Sky Coaches - Disabled Alpine Skiing are responsible for the athlete development programs at their allocated hill as detailed below. This includes providing support in the planning, implementation and evaluation of the programs.
The VASS adaptive race program will be run in partnership with DSABC and the Tyee Ski Club and will involve developing, implementing, and monitoring of the program. The program will involve both learn-to-race and advanced athletes.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Vancouver Adaptive Snow Sports
- Continue to develop, implement, monitor and evaluate the adaptive racing program already established with VASS
- To provide ongoing coaching for athletes with a disability in the adaptive race program
- Support and mentor developing coaches within the Lower Mainland region
- Regional Development
- Assisting High Performance Director in delivery of coaching in the Sea to Sky Region as part of athlete recruitment program: Building Our Best
- Travel to races (provincials, nationals and recreational races) to coach program members on an occasional basis
- Reporting Requirements & Evaluations
- Weekly updates with local program representative from VASS and Tyee
- Bi-weekly reports to High Performance Director & High Performance Committee
- Periodic reports to DSABC Board of Directors
- Quarterly submissions to DSABC Newsletter & website
- Seasonal meetings with DSABC & PacificSport for review of athlete training & performance plans.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:
- CSCF (Canadian Ski Coaches Federation) Level 2 minimum OR NCCP Level 1 minimum (including both Technical & Theoretical applications). Must show willingness to be working towards Level 3.
- CADS (Canadian Association for Disabled Skiing) Level 1 or 2 is a benefit. (This course will be a requirement for the Coach to complete in the first month in position).
- Member in good standing with CSCF and/or Coaches Association of BC
- Needs to be a member in good standing with CADS and/or DSABC (this can be done on commencement of employment)
- CSIA Level 1 or above is a benefit
- Passion for ski racing and athlete development
- Experience in adaptive ski racing is an asset
- Good knowledge of adaptive ski equipment and the ability to adapt for various athletes' needs & goals is an asset
- 2+ years Coaching experience (preferably in adaptive skiing, or adaptive sports)
- Ability to work as a team member, but also independently with little supervision
- Self-starter with excellent time management and organizational skills
- Criminal Record Check must be completed successfully (in 3 months) by December 1
- First Aid training is an asset
